Chapter 10
She spoke to Estrién the following day as they were making their way southwards, 'That trick - no, that's a bad word for it - that skill you have, with the animals - that's incredible. I watched you with the bears, I've never seen anything like it - and I lived in a circus! What wouldn't Longshanks have given for someone like you!'
Estrién smiled quietly, 'just something I picked up. But I think it's innate in me, as my uncle taught me the various signs and sigils, but he didn't seem to have the full ability I have. He was good with horses and dogs though.'
'Well, you saved my life ... all our lives ... we owe you.'
He turned to her. 'You owe me nothing, Amber, nothing at all. I'm happy to be with you all. I'd no idea what to do once I got my sword, I would have been drifting, or aimlessly sitting back at my uncle's manor, no more. I believe we have purpose, or we would not have come together.
Besides, I quite like my new friends. You're good people.' He walked off, slightly embarrassed about his speech, he wasn't used to opening up, letting people in, not been brought up that way. But these last days, he felt a close bond with them all.
...Particularly Amber.
That thing that happened whenever she touched him ... her nearness ... she made his skin tingle and his mouth go dry. He felt like a fumbling fool when she was close.
He shook the hair from his face and held his head high, 'Come on, let's get a move on, put some miles in,' he called to the others, quickened his pace and marched onwards.
Tamlyn set up a bawdy marching song and they all joined in. It was something about four hard soldiers, three willing wenches, two hungry bulls and a cock that crowed in the morn - or words to that effect. They sang with gusto.
They made good time, they were not too many miles from the border with Westerling, the roads were patrolled well here. But there were constant rumours about the Adammites and the Blazing Sun cult. Many of the rumours spoke of atrocities against mages, elves and women. They were slowly advancing across the mainland.
They made an overnight stay on the Mercantia side of the border, Amber was tired, didn't actually feel well.
'Probably all those horrible potions you gave me,' she stated.
She began losing blood that night, the potion certainly worked quickly, Dane helped, cleaned her up, stayed with her. It wasn't too bad, not like a full blown miscarriage, more like an all-at-once blood-flow, it may even have been merely that. It was just that she felt so ill. The other two supplied her with hot drinks, the odd brandy. Then she slept through most of the next day, although Dane thought that was probably due to shock.
But she looked brighter and cheerier the following day, She was grateful for their help, and their kindness. They even carried her pack the next couple of days to let her get her strength back.
